SPARGELHOF WINKELMANN

Spargelhof Winkelmann is a German producer of the northern highbush blueberry and asparagus. On account of its dynamic growth, the customer decided to install an additional production line equipped with sorting, packaging and labelling machines.

What were the challenges?

Due to the relatively short season and large quantities of fruit to be packed up over one day, the production line changeover time is extremely important to the Customer. Due to the huge diversity of package formats, changeovers are carried out several times a day.

What did we do?

For this project, we delivered a control cabinet based on a SIEMENS PLC with a touch display with a diameter of 12’, which would visualise the sorting and packaging line layout. The cabinet manages all signals from each machine, thus providing for the smooth operation of the entire line. The program has a diagnostic menu that allows the operator to quickly assess the operational status of a machine and promptly diagnose any faults. The cabinet delivered is also a power supply distribution centre for each component working in the line, which eliminates possible power supply-related problems and facilitates any related diagnosis. On account of the high standards applicable to the food industry, the control cabinets are made of stainless steel and are IP65 rated.

What was the effect?

With the option to view the operational status of each machine of the control cabinet display, the time required to align the line to match the new package format has been reduced to a large extent. In addition, operators are able to diagnose the causes of line downtimes on an ongoing basis, using the diagnostic options. Thus they are able to respond faster to any problems as they arise and increase the capacity of the production process.
